At your public library (or a major bookstore) you should be able to find Peterson's Guide to Private Secondary Schools. There are two guides. One is for special programs only, and the other is a comprehensive guide that includes ALL schools.

Have you seen the catalog from Hawthorne Educational Services? There are
some very fine manuals published by them. The ADD Interventions Manual, The
Student Skills Manual, The Parents Guide, etc.... All are composed as pages
of sequential lists to follow when addressing a specific behavior. You can

Freshman in college or highschool..... and what area are you looking in..... There are private settings such as behavior disordered and emotionally handicapped, and there are private religious associated schools, Also you might look into different motivational ideas for this child. I have downloaded a few. Look around in here. You might talk with the school psychologist... Maybe depression is a factor, maybe a learning disability, or maybe the child jst needs to be motivated, draw up a contract with him/her.
The child must meet certain expectations, then recieve a treat or a
priviledge. Ask the child what he/she is willing to work for. Make
learning fun. The child can look on the computer in the edcation area for
fun games and on-line contests. There is alot of software available that
teaches basic grade appropriate info and makes it fun.........Catherine

games, also (this is jst an idea) you can post a message at your nearby
college, maybe in the education department.......there are probably a number
of beginning students willing to work with him or even grad students willing
to do some work with him...... Talk to the college to see what prep courses
to take also they would be a good resource to get info from.........(just a
few ideas) Catherine

FIRST, THROW OUT ALL YOUR IDEAS THAT PUNITIVE MEASURES WORK WITH THESE KIDS
TO MODIVATE THEM. SET UP CLEAR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES AND REWARDS. DON'T
TAKE AWAY EARNED REWARDS. FOOD, EXCERISE ART AND MUSIC ARE LEARNING TOOLS.
DON'T TAKE THEM AWAY TO MODIVATE. YOU WILL BE SUPPRISED THAT YOU WILL HAVE
STUDENTS MUCH HAPPIER AND WORKING. USE EAR PHONES ON STUDENTS WITH SEVER
ATTENTION PROBLEMS. ITS KEEP ALL THE NOSIES OUT WHILE THEY ONLY HAVE TO
FOCUS ON ONE. IT SOUNDS CRAZY BUT IT WORKS. YOU CAN ALSO JUST PLAY MUSIC IN
CLASS WHILE ALL STUDENTS ARE WORKING. OFCOURSE CALM MUSIC WORKS BUT
EXPERIMENT. GOOD LUCK

No, not an excuse... but sometimes the realities of the difficulties ADHD bring have to be faced and dealt with, and sometimes just expecting more won't do it. When that's the case we do need interventions that will help the child begin to approach his or her potential.

Did you know that there is evidence that when a child with ADHD tries harder that the very area of their brain the need to use to retrieve information shuts down! So, expecting more by itself can demanding it can actually be a detriment to the outcomes that you might seek!

I am in desparate need for information, My son's life has been hell in academia. He could write his own directory for all the schools he has attended so far. We are now looking for another residential placement.
Lets start with last year:
We put him in a local LD school for bright kids and he bombed out. The teachers were all remedial and the kids were bizarre.
September This fall: Day one he was expelled
He was completely tested at UCLA NPI, and got a diagnosis of PDD NOs,Social Communication Deficit He pleaded to go back to public school . He went to public for 3 weeks with back up from special ed services on campus. He became truant and took drugs and became violent at home. We got him into a very small private boarding school which is supposed to meet the needs of bright underachievers. On paper this school looks like it is in the garden of eden. Now thay are asking for him to be placed elsewhere.
I am now looking at schools:
Rocky Mountain Academy, Idaho
Boulder Creek Acadey, Idaho
Mount Bachelor Academy, Oregon
CEDU, California
Oak Creek Ranch, Arizona.
I would love to have dialogue with anyone else in this situation.

I am a special educator at a residential and day treatment facility in which we have recently combined the two programs. We have EC, LD, MR, and regular ed. students; all students are "at-risk" and have behavior/academic problems. Our students change classes between 3 (possibly 4 in 96-97) teachers. We need a new schedule to better address the needs of the students, but the two regular ed teachers don't seem to be happy with anything that is suggested. Does anyone have any experience in scheduling this kind of environment? We need to teach students the four basic subjects, grades 7-12, and PE, with an emphasis on remediation of English and math skills. The school day is 8:00-3:00. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Jess, thanks for the excellent ideas.
I changed the folder description so that it makes sense to talk about *any* kind of residential school here.
What happens is that AOL members start these folders. Sometimes their particular interest may be narrowed to one area, but it makes sense to broaden it sometimes.
So I did. Thanks.

Residential placement is a very big step as I am sure you are aware. You don't say what other interventions you have tried up to this point. Is your child in a special class at school? Is your child involved in counseling? In New York state we have something called a PINS (person in need of supervision) petition, which can be filed by the school, police or the school. When a child is on a PINS they are required to meet weekly with a probation officer to discuss their progress. The principal at your child's school or your local police department may have information on this.
I spent the first seven years of my teaching career working at a residential school for adolescents and I loved it. I'd be happy to share more information with you, but first wanted to see if all other bases have been covered. Hang in there. You obviously want to get help for your child or you wouldn't have posted your message.

My son is a great kid; but having so much trouble in public schools. I hope to research and make the right placement for him the first time. I have work with the schools since 2nd grade and he is now in 8th. He is now labeled an SED "06" although he also has 09 ld's. He personally blames me for all of his problems in school, if I would just stay out of his life he'd be grand.
Teachers are dealing with his behavioral issues by putting him out of the
classroom. It occurs to me that I have done all I can through the public
school system. Has anyone found a good placement for "square peg"
(gifted/ld/behavioral) kids. Please let me know; my ARD is scheduled in 2
